Floods and Disease in Asia

Saturday July 24, 2004
This year's monsoon season has dumped more water on Asia than perhaps any since the late 1980's. The death toll in South Asia has climb past 700, according to the Associated Press. Most of those deaths have occurred in India; but about 200 are dead in Bangladesh and over 100 are dead in Nepal as a result of high water. Some 30% of India's deaths have come in Assam; by one estimate over half the state of Assam is under water as the Brahmaputra River floods there. Bihar is the Indian state hardest hit by the floods. Throughout the region official worry about the health impact of a lack of clean drinking water. Flooding has also hit China, where over 600 people are dead (100 in Yunnan Province alone) and Vietnam.
