Annapurna II

I got a small sampling of the Himalayas while trekking around Manali in North India last year.

Wow! And to think I was only in the 'foothills' -- the Himalayas will take your breath away in more ways than one. Asia can claim every single one of the tallest 14 peaks in the world, collectively known as the eight-thousanders because each is over 8000 meters (26,247 feet) tall.

While climbing just one would be a lifetime achievement, so far 26 brave people have reached the summits on each; some even did so without supplemental oxygen!

Doubt that my crampons will see that kind of action any time soon, however, the trek to Everest Base Camp in Nepal and walking the Annapurna circuit are a great way to get close to the action. With electricity being hard to find along the hike to EBC, you'll get a lot of good use out of a portable solar charger such as the Juicebar.

Asia offers some amazing hiking and climbing opportunities. Add some outdoor time to your Asia itinerary and check out this article on hiking safety in Asia to avoid 10 potential threats.
