Don't be fooled by their reddish-brown, fuzzy cuteness.

Among the smartest primates on earth, endangered orangutans are found only in Sumatra and Borneo.

Smart is actually an understatement. Orangutans understand gift reciprocity and have been taught sign language. They play computer games, make and share tools, and pass down knowledge of natural medicines to new generations!

I saw my first orangutans in Malaysian Borneo and was later treated to seeing them again while trekking in North Sumatra; I was close enough to hear them breathing!

Unfortunately, these amazing creatures are disappearing quickly and for a surprising reason.

See some amazing orangutan facts and read about how palm oil, an ingredient probably found in nearly every kitchen and bathroom, are to blame.
