Singapore in the Pink?
Thursday July 29, 2004
While Singapore may still have harsh laws against male homosexual activity on its books, the attitude of government in the city-state is changing. Singapore is relaxing its opposiiton to an open gay scene -- and Thailand is upset about it, according to the Agence France Press. Why? "PINK TOURIST DOLLARS!" Thailand has had a lock on the gay tourist scene for years. Those who monitor such things in Bangkok say that gay tourist arrivals from Singapore and Hong Kong are down by 20% to 30%. "It is possible that Singapore will be next gay capital," said one disheartened club owner in Bangkok. Singapore will host its first ever mardi gras-styled gay parade later this year.
