Bali's Year of Recovery

From About.com

Oct 12 2003
On October 12, 2002, a Bali exploded at a club in Bali's Kuta Beach area and killed 202 people. Most were tourists; 88 were Australians. But the victims represented a total of 22 countries.

Memorial services were held on the island today, according to Reuters. About 2000 people joined in the service.

The story Asia for Visitors published at the time of the blast is still available online.

Bali was the focus this week of a series of articles by TIME Magazine's Asia Edition. The articles focus on the psychological impact of the attack on the island's population, and on the economic damage the attack did to Bali's largest industry: tourism.

One year on, Bali is recovering. Prices are among the lowest they've been in decades and the Balinese are anxious to see tourism return to the level it was at before the bomb. Most of the suspects involved in the attack have been caught, tried, and sentenced to death in the Indonesian courts.

Among the best places to find information on visiting Bali is the website of Bali Discovery Tours.
