Wat Arun, the Temple of the Dawn

Wat Arun, better known as the Temple of Dawn, is among Bangkok's most recognizable landmarks. Its huge, elongated prang (the name for a tower in the Khmer architecural style) stands over 80 meters high. The tower, along with four other minor towers, symbolizes Mount Meru (which in Buddhist thought represents the center of the universe).

The temple's towers are covered with porcelain which is supposed to have been used a ballast by boats coming from China.

Ironically, the best picture of the wat are take at sunset, even though the temple is named after the Hindu god of the dawn. And the best views of the temple are from a distance -- across the Chao Phraya River. But the temple's grounds are refreshing to walk through and some of the elevated spots on the grounds provide a good view of the river.

The Temple of Dawn is the only major tourist attraction on the Thonburi side of the Chao Phraya River.
