Guide Review - Singapore's Gorkha Grill
Where in Singapore would you put a Nepalese restaurant? How about Chinatown...
Gorkha Grill is among the most interesting and affordable places to eat in Singapore. There is a mix of Australian dishes, African and Middle Eastern cuisines, and (naturally) Nepalese food on the menu. Gorkha has been described as "no frills," but that doesn't really seem fair. "Relaxed" might be a better term. And even if it is a "no frills" place, that is not a judgment on the service - which is excellent.
The Chara Ko Makhani (a tandoor chicken dish in creamy butter sauce) is among the better menu items. But Jheenge Papita (a papaya, filled with marinated prawns in thick wine-herb sauce) is perhaps the restaurant's best dish. Try the Momo Dumplings, made with seasoned chicken and fresh coriander...
After dinner there are a variety of excellent teas and coffees available.
Service is excellent, but there is no alcohol (although you can bring your own). The restaurant is partly air conditioned, partly open air.
Location: Shenton Way at 21 Smith Street in Chinatown, Singapore 058935. Tel: (65) 227 0806.
